On Tuesday, March 14th, Principal David Reid, Lead Researcher Michael Ralph, and UDL Implementation Coordinator & Senior Educator Sue Hardin will present the Deck of Spaces at the 2023 UDL-IRN International Summit in the session, How Can Your Learning Spaces be a Better “Third Teacher?”

Loris Malaguzzi, the founder of the Reggio Emilia education model, famously attested that “space is the third teacher.” This session will introduce powerful ideas about how space design reinforces UDL practices and enhances learner engagement and self-actualization. The authors will use the new 2nd Edition Deck of Spaces in a gamified exercise to illustrate its power in supporting UDL practices through space design and promoting equity and inclusion in the classroom. It’s an activity that can be easily replicated at attendee’s home schools to open up meaningful conversations throughout the school community. It empowers every person with the language to express their personal perspective on learner variability while seeing others’ perspectives they may not have otherwise considered.

The Deck of Spaces is a tool that our education design team utilizes during the engagement phase of a project. The Deck is a conversation starter and a brainstorming tool that allows educators and designers to introduce novel spatial concepts to all audiences.
