This rotating public exhibition transforms an urban corridor into a dynamic gallery, where six large-scale panels showcase local Phoenix artists illustrating original poetry. Together, these works spark conversation about our city, our environment, and our collective future.
Originally established in 2004 by the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture (POAC) Public Art Program, the 7th Avenue Streetscape was designed as a space for rotating public art. In 2018, the City of Phoenix Public Works Department introduced a new layer to the project—a citywide call for poetry focused on sustainability. Six selected poems, exploring themes of race, class, climate, and environmental responsibility, were brought to life through illustrations created by our Brand Experience team. Phoenix Poet Laureate Rosemarie Dombrowski played a key role in ensuring that each piece of art captured the essence and emotion of the written word, resulting in a powerful fusion of text and imagery.
This exhibition is more than something to look at—it’s something to experience. Whether walking, biking, or driving past, the artwork invites viewers to pause and reflect on their role in shaping a more sustainable city. Located in the heart of the Melrose district, the illuminated panels activate the streetscape, turning it into a vibrant, thought-provoking public space—one that evolves alongside Phoenix itself.
As one of the largest cities in the country leading conversations on environmental consciousness, Phoenix uses public art to challenge and inspire. The 7th Avenue Streetscape stands as a testament to the power of creativity in shaping culture, encouraging all who pass by to consider not only the artwork before them but also the impact they leave behind.
