Overland Park benefits from a powerful legacy of excellent parks, open spaces, and of a well-managed urban forest. As the city invests and plans for growth and development, it is critical to understand and protect this highly-valued resource.
The urban forest plan draws on community priorities, goals, and leading research to provide guidance to the city for the stewardship and expansion of the urban forest.
Over 1,000 responses to the online survey provided feedback on community priorities. Stakeholder discussions engaged the Legacy of Greenery Committee, Neighborhood Executive Committee, Environmental Advisory Council, and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee.
Document existing forest conditions and assess species mix, canopy cover, threats and challenges, and partnership support.
Improve tree canopy in every neighborhood. Prioritize access in high need neighborhoods. Recommend improved planting conditions and tree inventory
Assess existing tree protections for public and private land. Recommend incentives for tree preservation and protections.
Recommend best practices to maintain and expand forest. Includes tree inspective cycles, maintenance staff, and equipment.
Improve coordination among public agencies, related city departments, and stakeholder groups. Minimize conflicts between trees, infrastructure, and utilities.
Share benefits of City’s urban forest. Improve communication with community on tree activities and advance volunteer opportunities. Collect and share resident’s stories about the trees they love.
