The Free State High School improvements included moving the school’s library to a central corridor on the second floor, while connecting it to a first-floor dining commons with a monumental “media stair”, resulting in a new central learning commons and creating a venue for large gatherings.

Now located in the heart of the school, the learning commons is a space for for a variety of academic and social pursuits. The layout includes open, shared spaces and quiet rooms to provide the students flexibility and spatial autonomy.

After the completion of the project, Multistudio conducted two Post Occupancy Evaluations of the learning commons space to better understand the connection between library usage and student academic success.
