However, after six decades with minimal updates, the 90,000-square-foot facility required a complete transformation. The renovation redefines Derby as a welcoming, multi-functional hub serving as a satellite union for the northeast area of campus.
The second-floor dining center was redesigned into an open-concept space featuring multiple food platforms, presentation cooking stations, and made-to-order options. The new layout creates a more interactive, engaging dining experience, replacing the previously enclosed and introverted setting with a fresh, inviting atmosphere.
The renovation extends beyond dining, introducing a variety of student-focused spaces on the main floor. A new front entrance enhances visibility and accessibility, while a small café, retail bakery, convenience store, and lounge areas provide flexible places to study, socialize, or relax.

Additional amenities include an academic support center, student service offices, game tables, and casual seating areas, making Derby a destination for both residents and the broader K-State community.
This revitalized space enhances campus connectivity and student engagement, turning Derby Dining Center into an inclusive and welcoming environment that fosters both community and academic success. By blending modern amenities with a fresh approach to dining and gathering spaces, K-State has created a centralized hub that supports students far beyond their first year on campus.
