Rooted in the university’s Jayhawks Rising strategic plan, the masterplan seeks to align KU’s physical footprint with its academic, research, and community-focused mission.
Faced with aging infrastructure and evolving needs, the plan prioritizes efficiency, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility while fostering a more connected and engaging campus experience.
With a $750 million deferred maintenance backlog, KU needed a master plan that emphasized optimization over expansion. The plan introduces a data-driven framework that assesses building performance, space utilization, and long-term campus needs to guide decision-making.
A core principle of the master plan is creating a more cohesive and inclusive campus experience. Key projects focus on improving pedestrian accessibility, enhancing outdoor public spaces, and integrating new mixed-use developments that foster collaboration. By reimagining campus pathways, expanding greenspaces, and reinforcing a strong sense of place, KU is making the campus more inviting for students, faculty, and visitors alike.
KU’s role as a leading research institution is reflected in the plan’s focus on strengthening research facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration. New investments in technology-rich spaces, modernized academic buildings, and innovation hubs will support KU’s mission to advance knowledge and attract top-tier faculty and students. In parallel, the plan enhances student success initiatives by creating environments that promote engagement, wellness, and hands-on learning.
The 2024 Master Plan is more than a set of recommendations—it is a flexible roadmap designed to evolve with KU’s needs. Through a phased implementation approach, the university will prioritize key projects over the next decade, ensuring that investments are made strategically and sustainably. As KU embraces this next chapter, the master plan will serve as a blueprint for a campus that is resilient, connected, and ready to shape the future.
